Job Title: Design & Technology (DT) Technician
Location: Ruislip
Contract Type: Term Time + 1 Week (39 weeks)
Hours: Monday to Thursday, 8.00am – 3.45pm (30 minutes unpaid lunch)
Friday, 8.00am – 3.30pm (30 minutes unpaid lunch)
Salary: (£26,233 – £27,263 actual salary / £30,288 – £31,611 FTE)
 
About the Role
We are seeking an enthusiastic and proactive DT Technician to join our thriving Design & Technology Department. With access to state-of-the-art facilities completed in 2022—including three fully equipped workshops, two computer suites, and dedicated areas for 3D printing and laser cutting—this is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in supporting innovative teaching and learning in DT.
 
Key Responsibilities

• Prepare and organise materials, tools, and equipment for lessons across KS3–KS5, including woods, metals, plastics, and mixed media.
• Support staff and students during practical sessions, ensuring a safe and efficient working environment.
• Set up, operate, and maintain a range of equipment including traditional workshop machinery, 3D printers, laser cutters, and other digital manufacturing technologies.
• Carry out routine maintenance and safety checks on all machinery and tools, ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations.
• Assist in the development of new projects and prototypes, offering technical expertise to support innovative design work.
• Manage stock levels, order materials and equipment, and maintain accurate inventory records.
• Contribute to maintaining a clean, safe, and well-organised environment within workshops and preparation areas.
• Support extra-curricular and enrichment activities such as clubs, exhibitions, or competitions when required.
• Liaise with teaching staff to develop resources and advise on technical feasibility of projects.
• Participate in regular training and CPD to stay up to date with emerging technologies and best practice.

 
Person Specification
Essential Skills & Experience:

• Practical knowledge of working with hard materials (woods, metals, plastics).
• Competence in the set-up, safe use, and maintenance of workshop equipment.
• Awareness of health and safety standards and risk assessments in a workshop/educational setting.
• Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise tasks and meet deadlines.
• Excellent communication skills and a willingness to support students and staff in a positive, patient manner.

Desirable Skills & Experience:

• Experience of working in a school or educational environment.
• Knowledge of new technologies such as laser cutting, CNC machining, and 3D printing.
• An understanding of basic engineering, electronics, or mechanics.
• First Aid and/or Health & Safety qualifications (training can be provided).
