BSL Teaching Assistant – Brixton Primary School – September Start
Pertemps Education is working in partnership with a primary school in Brixton to recruit a dedicated BSL Teaching Assistant to join their specialist deaf unit from September.
This is a rewarding opportunity to support deaf pupils in a nurturing, well-resourced environment. The successful candidate will assist with communication, learning, and personal development, working closely with Teachers of the Deaf and the wider inclusion team.
Location: Brixton
Start Date: September 2025
Contract: Full-Time, Term-Time Only
Salary: Competitive (dependent on experience and qualifications)
About the Role:
- Support deaf pupils in the specialist deaf unit and mainstream classrooms
- Use British Sign Language (BSL) to aid communication, understanding, and access to the curriculum
- Work with pupils 1:1 and in small groups to support both academic progress and emotional wellbeing
- Liaise with Teachers of the Deaf, SENCO, and external professionals to deliver tailored support
- Help create a safe, inclusive, and language-rich learning environment
- Contribute to pupils’ social development and independence skills
The Ideal Candidate Will:
- Hold at least a Level 1 BSL qualification (Level 2 or 3 preferred)
- Have experience working with deaf or hearing-impaired children (in education or care settings)
- Be passionate about inclusive education and breaking down communication barriers
- Be patient, empathetic, and confident supporting pupils with varied communication needs
- Be a strong team player, able to work collaboratively with teachers and support staff
- Be proactive and open to further professional development
Additional BSL training will be provided if required to help develop your skills in line with pupil needs.
